The renovated Chalet SOLEYÂ, a traditional mountain home in Les Houches, France, by Chevallier Architectes is situated on a natural promontory and surrounded by rock faces. The main challenge with this modern extension for the architects was to avoid tampering with the integrity of the original building, while incorporating an updated design, modern materials and sustainable features.
The most prominent change to the structure is the addition of a large living space built specifically for social gatherings. The cantilevered room made of glass and lacquered black aluminum contrasts with the original, low-ceiling, timber structure, which houses the bedrooms and bathrooms.
The interior design featured in the extension merges rustic elements with contemporary details. Large picture windows showcase the views of the surrounding nature and a deck hot tub and a sauna can be enjoyed all year round. Sustainable features include a green roof, sun-facing façades and high-performance insulating solutions. [Photos and information provided by Chevallier Architectes]
